People keep wondering about SHOLAY, the most successful movie in INDIA, a cult classic which spent years in various theatres of Bombay and other cities. The style, the dialogs, the eccentric villain and the never-seen-before locales created a strange amusement amongst the Indian movie connoisseurs. As a result, they worship the movie. Amitabh Bachchan shot to intense fame after the movie's release in the year 1976.
People went so crazy that they erected a temple at Calcutta, INDIA in the honor of Amitabh Bachchan where fans actually worship his idol. So now let me share the truth behind the making of Sholay. The SHOLAY recipe was simple. The famous writer duo of India, Salim-Javed clearly extracted the script from 4 wonderful western hollywood classics -
1. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
2. The Magnificent Seven
3. Once Upon A Time in The West
4. For A Few Dollars More
Each and every scene from the movie SHOLAY has been copied exactly from these four gems. The recipe consists of entire scenes from these 4 movies blended into similar Indian locales and then beautifully churned into a DESI Bollywood style storyline which also includes two beautiful actresses for the two handsome men and also a wonderful "dance-to-save-the-HERO" song.
Yes it has the same spice!
If you watch the 4 classics, you can immediately make out the prominent similarities. As a matter of fact, the evil laughter of GABBAR SINGH has also been portrayed exactly by Amjad Khan.
Now you know what magic can be created by adding a hint of Bollywood Spice to Four Great Hollywood classics! Enjoy the movies though!

Hey Harshi,
I agree with you that it's been inspired by hollywood movies for me Sholay remains one of the greatest movie of all time. Every movie in world is inspired by other previously made movies or from novels.
Sholay was perfect movie in every aspect film is concern ,great music, dance , and dialogs . I can watch that movie any number of time

HAHA. "Inspired". We Indians use that word VERY freely. Copy is a copy and stealing is stealing. End of story. Inspired would be having a certain amount of similarities, like The Beatles being inspired by Chuck Berry or Naruto being inspired by DBZ.

Exact copies are not called "inspired".

I do agree that movie can be inspired from novels. That would be total creativity but in this case it is sheer plagiarism. Even the song "Mehbooba O Mehbooba" has been a total remake of a song by German singer Demi Rouass. I believe in pure creativity and plagiarism is not worth giving a credit.
Good to know that you love the movie it sure is entertaining in the typical Hindi Film Industry genre. Thank you so much for being a good critic! =)

YouTube search for "RD Burman Copycat" also to see how much India's supposed "greatest composer" (haha) has stolen. ALL of his biggest hits were stolen.

Perhaps you should have added a few facts to support a claim. Describe the scenes which you think are lift offs.
I have seen the good the bad and the ugly and other than horses and pistols I could not find any similarities between the screenplays of the two.

Everything about bollywood is a lie. People should understand the difference between "inspired", "remake" and "copied". I hate bollywood because each and every bollywood movie that I liked in my childhood turned out of to be a "COPY" of a foreign movie

indians are ashamed to admit they copy - so they rap their "copy" with nice words like inspiration. However good work I was looking for the original names. By the way even our constitution is coipied from British and the USA

These movies never seen by salim or javed lots of thing are similar in world that makes imagination and imagination creates story coincedently some things might be similar it doesn't mean it is copy.
It is all about hostility and kida.

What I am wondering about is that Javed Akhtar always tells a story about Sholey, that Saleem Javed went to many producers with the script and it got refused for years. He never said that they went to producers with the film cans of the original movies. I also wonder that should you get so much of name, fame gratifications etc etc for translating and keeping on boasting about the creativity- of what - Translation?

hi, inspirtions exists and idealism and lots of things exits , all industries do so, but cheating is not to mention on doing that :) e,g Aamir Khan flim Gajni is copied from "Bourn" series and Indian industry is full of such stories . The thing is viewers should be so infromative and active in knowledge and movies to know , instead of enjoying copies.

Though it is such a successful movie i feel sick to know that it was copied. I have seen the movie "Once upon a time in the West" and no one deny the fact that Sholay was copied after watching this movie.
Movies of Hishikesh Mukherjee are real ones and not copied ones.

Thanks for providing such information. I was shocked to know that sholay which is considered as the greatest movies of bollywood is copied. Its like Bollywood means Copywood because most (70%) of movies are copied.

You are completely Mistaken Mr Harsha. The movie Magnificent seven was copied from the Japanese film The Seven Samurai (1954) and once upon a time in the west was insipired by 5 different westerns. For a few dollars more was an Italian western and not american. The Good the bad and ugly was itself an italian western. It's prequel A fistful of dollars was a shameless remake of the Japanese film "Yojimbo".So every inspiration is borrowed.Despite all these copy cats Sholay remains memorable because it was perfectly made. The famous film director Satyajit Ray called Sholay an excellent film because it was perfectly made.

Copying alone is not enough to make a classic like Sholay. Salim javed cheated but not the actors or director or producer. And what is the harm in copying if it can entertain crores of public.

And many of those westerns were "inspired" by Akira Kurosawa's films. Mr. Bhatia here has already got a good answer for you...so suck it...Sholey rocks...

Harshi, of course, there are some scenes copied from other movies....no movie ever has every single original scene. However, your desire to discredit Sholay has made you blinkered :
"....after the movie's release in the year 1976."
Sholay was actually released on 15th Aug 1975.

"Each and every scene from the movie SHOLAY has been copied exactly from these four gems. "
Really? Pls tell me which movie the Soorma Bhopali scene was copied from? Or the Holi song-and-dance? Or the 'tanga' scenes?
Or the cutting off of Thakur's hands - one of the most poignant moments in the movie?

Actually, there is only 1 Hollywood movie in this list of inspirations for SHOLAY.
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (1960) is the only Hollywood film listed (and it was based on a Japanese movie, THE SEVEN SAMURAI, by Akira Kurosawa).
The other films, all directed by Sergio Leone, were Italian films and not Hollywood, at all.
Regardless of the inspirations, SHOLAY remains a unique and wonderful film.

Hi Harshi,
Stumbled upon your comments. Add One more of the Hollywood greats from which a scene of the Sholay was copied. It's Gary Cooper's Garden of Evil, where he is cheated by a card sharp to hold fort against the Apaches...
